Dartmouth Cancer Center
Rural New England's NCI comprehensive centre, the academic origin of Medarex (ipilimumab and nivolumab) and a hub for research on overdiagnosis.
NCI-designated since 1978 and comprehensive since 1990, Dartmouth Cancer Center (renamed from Norris Cotton in 2022) serves northern New England from Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Medarex, the company whose fully human antibody platform produced ipilimumab and nivolumab before Bristol Myers Squibb acquired it in 2009, was founded in 1987 by Dartmouth immunologists. The Dartmouth Institute's health-policy research, including Gilbert Welch's work on overdiagnosis, has shaped debate on cancer screening. Current research programmes cover immunology and cancer immunotherapy, cancer biology, and rural cancer control.
