The American Joint Committee on Cancer now updates its staging one cancer at a time as Version 9 protocols, so a report may use the 8th edition for one cancer and Version 9 for another.
The AJCC moved from printed editions to versions. Its 2026 table of the current staging system lists which of the 8th edition's chapters have been replaced by a Version 9 protocol and when: appendix carcinoma, anus and brain and spinal cord (2023); the six neuroendocrine tumour sites (stomach, duodenum and ampulla, jejunum and ileum, appendix, colon and rectum, pancreas) and vulva (2024); nasopharynx, thymus, lung and diffuse pleural mesothelioma (2025); salivary glands and HPV-associated oropharynx (2026); and cervix uteri (2021). Every other site still uses its 8th edition chapter.
