Rotterdam's OECI-accredited comprehensive cancer centre, where peptide receptor radionuclide therapy with lutetium-177 was pioneered and Europe's largest screening trials were led.
Erasmus MC Cancer Institute unites the former Daniel den Hoed cancer clinic with the oncology departments of Erasmus University Medical Center and holds OECI comprehensive cancer centre accreditation. Its nuclear medicine group under Eric Krenning and Dik Kwekkeboom developed somatostatin-receptor imaging and then 177Lu-DOTATATE peptide receptor radionuclide therapy for neuroendocrine tumours, the treatment later validated in NETTER-1 and approved as Lutathera. Erasmus MC epidemiologists coordinated the European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer and the NELSON lung screening trial, which showed a mortality reduction from low-dose CT screening. The institute co-founded the Holland Proton Therapy Centre in Delft with LUMC and TU Delft, and is a leading sarcoma, breast and neuro-oncology trial site under Stefan Sleijfer.
