Where HPB cancer surgery happens in the UK: about two dozen specialist centres, each with a weekly specialist MDT that takes every treatment decision for gallbladder and bile duct cancer in its region.
Overview
NHS England commissions specialist HPB cancer surgery under service specification 2260 (September 2024), which requires a catchment of at least two million people, 150 liver operations a year for cancer and a weekly specialist MDT. The National Pancreatic Cancer Audit identifies the English centres by trust code (Table 7 of its 2025 methodology supplement, sourced from Pancreatic Cancer UK's centre list); Pancreatic Cancer UK also names the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish centres and AMMF keeps a parallel list of centres with cholangiocarcinoma expertise.
